Professor Ippazio Luceri, from Martano, went on hunger strike from yesterday 23 June. A strike in solidarity with revolutionary prisoners in Turkey, Sibel Balaç and Gökhan Yıldırım, unjustly sentenced by the courts of Ankara and Istanbul, respectively to eight and a half years in prison the first and 46 the second.
Sibel is a former teacher from Turkey who, following the layoffs of one hundred thousand teachers and public servants, took to the streets in Ankara every day to express her opposition to this measure, launched by Erdogan’s government detrimental to the interests of workers and their families, until she was arrested and subsequently sentenced.
Sentenced, without any legal basis, to 8 and a half years in prison for this commitment.
Against all this, since 19 December 2021 she has been on hunger strike demanding: a fair trial, the reintegration of the one hundred thousand teachers and employees made redundant, the release of all political prisoners, starting with the sick ones.
Gökhan Yıldırım, on the other hand, is a revolutionary from Turkey who, in the Gazi district of Istanbul, was politically engaged in denouncing the spread of drug trafficking and drug dealers in the area, until a Kurd, already used by the government as a “village guardian”, against the Kurds themselves, did denounce him as a troublemaker and fomentor of protests against Erdogan’s government.
And it is only on the basis of his statements that Gökhan Yıldırım was arrested, tried and sentenced to 46 years in prison.
Yıldırım, too, followed Sibel’s example, and just six days after her, starting from December 25, 2022, he went on hunger strike, claiming as well as the former teacher: a fair trial and the release of all political prisoners, starting with the sick ones.
In the province of Lecce, as soon as the news of the hunger strike of the two revolutionaries in Turkey was heard, the establishment of a Provincial Coordination for the Liberation of Sibel and Gökhan was immediately given birth.
“The Coordination is open to every lover of Freedom, Justice and Solidarity. Already there are political militants both on an individual level and in political associations and organizations”, we read on the Facebook page of Arci Lecce Territorial Committee.”
